Melbourne BUG Campaign Issues

Melbourne BUG is campaigning to fill a number of gaps in on and off-road bike lanes and paths.

In December 2004 we went on a Fill-the-Gaps ride, to visit all of the major problem spots. Here are our notes and the photos we took. Click on images for larger size.

1. Peel St / Dudley St roundabout

Issue: dangerous point for north-bound users of proposed new on-road CBD lanes in William St (from Flinders St to Victoria St)

Proposed solution: Bike lane north up William Street to join shared footpath on West side to Dudley St pedestrian lights [width of footpath at end of existing on-road lane = 3.5m. Wide pram ramp needed to get off road to shared path].

Once across Dudley St, need bike lanes up William St North to corner Howard / Victoria.

2. Elizabeth St from Haymarket roundabout south to Victoria St.

Issue: logical continuation of proposed new on-road CBD lanes in Elizabeth St (from Flinders St to Victoria St), will be gap otherwise.

Proposed solution: None at present

Notes: Width of 2 north-bound lanes behind angle parking is 6.6m. Perhaps replace angle parking with parallel parking? Kerb to kerb width is 12m.

3. Curzon / Victoria St gap

Issue: small gap between 2 on-road lanes at this point

Proposed solution: shared path from end of bike land in Curzon St joining parking area around corner on north side of Victoria Street

4. Arden / Tennyson / Childers gap

Issue: Arden Street on-road lanes have major gaps west of City Link and past the Kensington Station to Kensington Rd on-road lanes, Hobsons Rd on-road lanes to Maribyrnong trail

Notes: Moonee Ponds Creek bridge on Arden Street is inadequate for cyclists (especially the south side). This is a heritage bridge, designed by John Monash.

Arden Street lanes heading West end at Lloyd Street. Just beyond this, there is a footbridge, with very steep steps and a narrow ramp for pushing bikes. This needs to be replaced with a bridge with much easier gradients, possibly on the west side of the building at the south-west end of Arden Street.

5. Old Stock Route trail / Maribyrnong trail

Notes: a number of improvements are needed between the Old Stock Bridge and connecting paths.

Melways 42 G3

Ramp to bridge on north side of Maribyrnong River is too steep and leads down to road at corner with poor sightlines.

Surface is quite rough at top of ramp, where cyclists need to do a U-turn to access bridge

Looking north-east to Kensington Banks housing. Ramp from Hobsons Rd (connects with Childers / Arden St and Macaulay Rd lanes), at right of picture, to path at left of picture, could provide safer access with an easier gradient

6. Bridge over Manningham St on Capital City Trail

Issue: steps down to, and crossing of Manningham St, are significant gap in CC Trail

Notes: Concept plans for a bridge across this gap were prepared in November 2003. Cost is likely to be around $400K

7. Off-road path in Royal Park from north entrance to Zoo to Elliot Avenue

Notes: This useful route needs to be sealed and signposted and to divert around the northern side of the Zoo carpark at the north entrance to Zoo

Melways 29 E11, D12

8. Grattan St, from Swanston to Rathdowne

Issue: gap in major east-west on-road route

Notes: on-road lanes would complete the east-west route along Grattan St

Melways 43 H4, J4

9. Link from Queensbury St to Gertrude St via Exhibition Building car park

Notes: There is ample room (over 10m wide) for a bike path through the Carlton Gardens at this point. This is an absolutely crucial east-west route.

Melways 43 J6, K6

Existing on-road lanes next to the Carlton Gardens, on the east side of Rathdowne Street, need to be improved.

Melways 43 J4

Rathdowne St lanes looking south. Cyclist currently need to divert to the right, as the on-road lane moves to the right around parking spaces. There is inadequate signage, etc, to warn cars that both they and cyclists are about to change direction.

10. Spring St from Lonsdale to Collins

Issue: gap in existing and future CBD lanes and approaches

Notes: on-road lanes are required to fill this gap

Melways 43 K7

11. Flinders St south side shared path, from Swanston St to Spring

Issue: gap in connection between St Kilda Rd, Southbank, Swanston St routes and Wellington Pde and MacArthur St routes

Notes: The footpath on the south side of Flinders Street is wide enough to be a shared path, creating a safe alternative route to dangerous Flinders Street.

Melways 43 J9, K8

Looking west along Flinders Street south side path from near Spring Street.

12. Linlithgow Ave

Issue: gap between Yarra path and St Kilda Rd

Notes: on-road lanes would be useful

Melways 43 K10

13. Moray Street, between Kingsway & Westgate flyovers

Issue: short gap between Queensbridge St on-road lanes and Moray St on-road lanes

Notes: Mark bike lane leading north to join existing lane. Heading south, improve marking of lanes and usage of shared path - ie install better signage

Melways 43 G11, G12

14. Clarendon St between Jeff's Shed & Casino

Issue: gap between Southbank path and Sandridge Light Rail path

Notes: use footpath along east side of Jeff's Shed to connect Sandridge Light Rail path to Southbank path at Clarendon Street bridge

Melways 43 F11

15. Clarendon St bridge to Spencer Street

Issue: gap between Southbank path and north bank of Yarra, Spencer St

Notes: use footpath along west side of Clarendon Street bridge to create shared path connection
